A Couple of Sure Bets

NJ Senator Christopher ‘Kip’ Bateman (R) chat,

for a Town Meeting held at the Raritan Valley Community
 College on April 11, 2013
In New Jersey on this Election Day there are, as always, seats that the incumbents are sure to retain.  Two of those are currently held by State Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli (R) and State Senator Christopher ‘Kip’ Bateman in Legislative District 16.

I was unable to vote on their behalf today, because I find myself in another district.  (If you want to get an idea of how the political sausage is made, check out this official color map of New Jersey’s hacked up districts.)  But I digress.
Were these two public servants within my district, they would have had my votes.  Bateman has held progressively responsive positions in the New Jersey Legislature for almost twenty years.  He is one of the sons of former NJ Senate President Raymond Bateman who was also a contender for the NJ Governorship in 1977.

Since his election to the New Jersey Legislature, the younger Bateman has been successfully cutting his own swath in leadership positions.
Jack Ciattarelli, on the other hand, is a newly elected member of the New Jersey Assembly, serving there only since 2012, but he has personal characteristics that could propel him even further in elected office.

Prior to his current position, Ciattarelli was a Raritan Borough Councilman (1990-95) and, after that a Somerset County Freeholder (2007-11).
I first came across Ciattarelli in action one evening in Somerville when the Freeholders were discussing the then highly controversial topic of whether or not it was still desirable to retain the services of the Somerset County Park Commissioners, or to change this form of oversight.

In what was a very difficult decision for him (he ended up being in the minority when the final votes were cast to retain the Commissioner-based system), he held his ground in the face of some very strong pressure.  Just the kind of person you want in office.

(The polls close at 8:00 pm this evening – be sure to record your choices, no matter how secure your favorites may seem to be.)
