All About Knitting

Each Monday, those of us who blog for Courier News web site, MCJ.com, receive an e-mail which shows the number of ‘hits’ (the frequency of your visits) received by each blog for the prior week.  The results are sorted in numerical order, with blogs receiving the highest number of ‘hits’ listed first.

Those rankings are established solely by you, the reader, and reflect the popularity of any specific blog which, in turn, is determined by your interest in the subject matter and the frequency and skill of postings by the author(s).

Sports themes are very popular, followed by a variety of other topics of general interest.  There is one blog, however, which has attracted my attention over the years during which I have been writing.  It is a weekly standout and different from all of the rest.

Written by Courier News Real Estate Editor, Pam Mackenzie, it’s called in In Stitches and, as the name suggests, it is all about knitting.  Yes, knitting!  Moreover, it consistently garners a very high ranking in MCJ.com’s “Hit Parade” every week.

This shouldn’t be a surprise to me, because I come from a family (as does Priscille) with a long record of proficient knitters.  Over the years, I’ve had plenty of clothing items knitted for me by my Mom, Pris, my mother-in-law, and other skilled women in the family.

Recalling that some men also knit, I became curious and decided to check it out.  That’s when I discovered that there have been prominent men, together with other famous female personalities who have enjoyed this skillful and relaxing practice.

The web site Pinterest provides a list with photos of personalities such as Russell Crowe, George Lucas, Sarah Jessica Parker, Elizabeth Taylor, etc.

Did you know that Cary Grant was a knitter?  So were the late president Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his wife Eleanor.  Then, there is football idol Rosey Grier who took up needlepoint and macramé.

(Grier played for the New York Giants for six years before being traded to the Los Angeles Rams, where he garnered more fame as one of the Rams’ legendary Fearsome Foursome which included Lamar Lundy, Merlin Olsen and Deacon Jones.)

p.s. An interesting factoid:

“Rosey” was named after one of our presidents, Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
